46 FOCUS - SEPTEMBER 2016 46 FOCUS - NOVEMBER 2017 Dear Editor Remembrance Day will be bittersweet for my family and myself this year. On February 6th, my father passed away at the age of 92. Eric Timms – dearly loved husband of my Mom Lilian, cherished father, grandfather, uncle, special friend to many and a proud veteran of WWll. Dad served in the British Royal Navy as a communications coder aboard the naval destroyer, HMS Onslow. Two months after my Dad died, I stood on Juno Beach in Normandy, France. With my husband Myles and son Rory, I looked out over the English Channel and saluted the man who dedicated four years of his young life to serving his country and to fighting for the freedom we enjoy today. I admired the courage of those who came ashore on D-Day and those, like my Dad, who patrolled the Channel looking for German U-Boats. And he was one of the “lucky ones”, because he came home. So many others didn’t. During our tour we walked around numerous cem- eteries with row upon row of fallen soldiers, known and unknown. We stood at the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium and witnessed the nightly Last Post Ceremony, a moving tribute to the courage and self-sacrifice of those who died in defense of the town. Then on April 9th, we sat under the blue skies at Vimy Ridge and witnessed the 100th Anniversary celebration of this great battle. Let us continue to remember those who have gone before us, as well as those who continue to serve around the world. I really appreciate the respect and honour that Port Perry/Scugog Township gives to veterans. My Dad loved being in the “Vets for Vets” parade. He attended every Remembrance Day service in Port Perry. His ban- ner will fly alongside other distinguished servicemen and women. I am grateful to the local Legion Branch 419 for their dedication to all veterans, especially my Dad. And thank you, Focus on Scugog, for continuing to highlight this important time of remembrance. I will never forget.
