FOCUS - NOVEMBER 2017 25 When Maurice applied for this position at the Township of Scugog, he was “hired on the spot.” At age 75, he has never been out of a job. A lifelong Scugog Township resident, Maurice grew up on a 100-acre farm near Greenbank. The Midgleys had 80 head of cattle. He attended Greenbank Public School and had the same two teachers all the way up to grade eight. He did not attend high school, but that didn’t stop Maurice from getting steady employment in various fields over the years, including driving tractor trailers for gravel companies, working at GM, welding, farming and construction work. He helped build the Smoke House building in 1980. In 1964, Maurice met his future wife, Georgina, at an ice skating rink in Brooklin. He was 22 when they got married and moved into town. They raised two daugh- ters and have one grandchild. In February of 2018, they will celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary. Georgina still works too. She has been employed by Shoppers Drug Mart for eight years. Birds of a feather, Maurice and Georgina both keep busy. And keep on smiling.
