52 FOCUS - SEPTEMBER 2018 Sue and Jim Waddington have travelled to 600 places in beautiful northern Canada. These are all the sites painted by the Group of Seven, which are part of their iconic legacy of Canadian art. Keeping detailed records, recording the views as they look now and comparing this with the artists impressions of the scene has resulted in a magnificent book entitled In the Footsteps of the Group of Seven. Solving the puzzle of each painting and locating the spot where an artist sat while painting or sketch- ing has led to searches by foot and canoe to Killarney Provincial Park, Bon Echo Provincial Park, Georgian Bay, Yukon, and Nunavut. A quest that took them literally in the footsteps of our great Canadian artists. Come hear the Waddington’s de- scribe their journeys, see their beauti- ful photographs, and learn more about our world renowned Canadian artists. Angie Littlefield, a local writer, has researched the life and times of Tom Thomson, an unofficial member of the Group of Seven, who was born in Claremont not far from our venue. She has authored books about Tom Thomson, with her most recent being Tom Thomson’s Fine Kettle of Friends: biography, history, art and food. We shall learn more about Tom Thomson the man as Angie enlightens us about his family, lifestyle, friendships and relationships. Tom Thomson and his family loved to gather for social- izing and did enjoy picnics. We shall use some of Angie’s research to re-create the atmosphere of the box lunch socials of the period along with vintage pieces for sale.
