FOCUS - SEPTEMBER 2018 41 Have you ever wondered how printmaking is done? Always wanted to attend a writers’ workshop? Are you curious about lavender farms? “Culture Days is a great entry point into the arts community,” com- mented Jessica Topfer, the Project Manager for Culture Days in Port Perry, hosted by the Scugog Council of the Arts (SCA). Thethree-dayfreefestivalcelebrat- ing everything cultural will be held on the last weekend in September. More activities are being confirmed weekly; the lineup so far is already widely appealing. Many of the events will take place in the downtown core, with the SCA location, as the hub, and Perry Street will be closed north to Queen St. Some of the activities will be further afield. With the help of a 2018 Spark grant, Seagrave will be alive with an Art Day in the Park festival, featuring displays of arts and crafts, music and a BBQ. Don’t miss the eco garden and studio tours at Lavender Blu. In keeping with the On Beat theme, there will be music in the air. Steve Rensink will demonstrate all the stages of flute making. The Port Perry High School Music Dept. is organizing an instrument petting zoo. THE DUKES local ukulele group is putting on a children’s music circle at the library. Participants must pre- register for this fun-filled, interactive program. An entertaining encore reading of The Bush Ladies, by the Borelians, will also be staged at the library venue. The Lake Scugog Studio Tour is hosting a mini studio tour. SCAmem- ber Angela Hennessey will conduct an interesting printmaking work- shop. You can even try your hand at sidewalk chalk art. Successful local author Lucy E. M. Black welcomes writers to her work- shop. Robin and Jessica thank their spon- sors for enabling Culture Days to be free admission for all. “We hope that Culture Days helps people develop a love for the arts,” Jessica commented. Culture Days is a national network of cultural connections that raises awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life. Hundreds of cities and towns from coast to coast host participatory public events and activities, noted Arts Administrator for SCA, Robin Bonkowski. Port Perry has participated in the past, on and off, and this is the fourth consecutive year. Port Perry is being recognized as a Durham Region destination for the new “Culture Trek” through Durham North. The downtown core is listed as a “Cultural Corridor” with the street festival on Saturday morning. Robin and Jessica are enthusiastic about this widespread publicity, which promises to create more vis- ibility, community reach, arts and culture networking and tourism for Port Perry. Mark September 28, 29 and 30 on your calendar to enjoy this free festival! Updates on all of the exciting activities offered will be available at www.scugogarts.ca/culture-days.
