56 FOCUS - SEPTEMBER 2018 This fall leading up to the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice – the end of WWI, Scugog Township will be hosting one of the largest Armistice commemorations in Canada with several events beginning in September lead- ing up to a very memorable Remembrance Ceremony on November 11th. The Scugog Remembrance Committee has been meeting regularly since February with committee repre- sentation and participation from most community groups. Beginning in mid-September at the Scugog Memorial Library, Scugog Township will join our nation’s capital, Ottawa, each of the provincial Capitals and three territo- ries, each of our Canadian Embassies, many of the major military Museums in the world (including the Flanders Fields Museum), in the moving tribute - “The World Remembers”. A Canadian actor conceptualized this pro- ject; R. H. Thompson pays individual tribute to all the men, women and children that lost their lives in WWI. It runs 10 hours a day from mid-September through to November through the generous support of 100 Women of Scugog. This exhibit will also be shown at several of our local participating schools. October 11th is opening night for the Borelian produc- tion of “Soldiers Heart”. A Canadian drama by David French, tells the story of sixteen-year-old Jacob Mercer from Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, 1924. Jacob has had a violent fight with his father, Esau, and has decided to take the next train out of town. Six years earlier, Esau Mercer returned from the Great War a damaged man, never able to speak of his time in the trenches. When Esau arrives at the station in an attempt to stop Jacob from leaving, the boy seizes the opportunity to help his father heal. Jacob agrees to stay – if his father will speak about the War. Neither of them is prepared for what happens when Esau finally gives his devastating and unsparing account of what happened on the day that the Newfoundland Regiment was wiped out at Beaumont Hamel. This quintessential Canadian post- war drama comes from one of Canada’s most celebrated playwrights. Tickets can be purchased through the Borelians website: borelians.ca.
