4 FOCUS - JUNE 2017 members of the community who were interested in form- ing a Scugog office of CDD. Richard Johnston facilitated a unity development approach. Scugog Community Care Durham was officially established on November 17, 1977, with an advisory board of 15 members who recruited 80 volunteers. They found office space, scrounged furniture, painted, secured office equipment and moved into the ticket booth at the old arena on Water Street. The late Scugog Councillor Richard Drew negotiated a no charge lease with the municipality. Elizabeth Fulford was hired. When the arena fell to the wrecker’s hammer, CCD relocated to an office on Perry St. for a short while before moving to a house on North St. The present location is 16100 Old Simcoe Rd. The administrators who succeeded Liz Fulford were Dorothy Imperial, Jenny Yorgason and Lorrie Houston, who has served as Administrator for the past 4 years. “The vision of 40 years ago is alive and well today!” Lorrie commented. Our 11th annual walk takes place Saturday June 17 at the Port Perry fairgrounds. I got involved with the ALS Society 13 years ago when my Dad was diagnosed with ALS. It is a neurodegenerative disease where the nerve cells that control your muscles die leading to loss of mobility, loss of speech and eventually impact the ability to breathe. When someone in your family is diagnosed with ALS it is a disease that affects the whole family. That is why the ALS walks in Ontario form teams to come and walk, as it is a team of people that helps support and care for the person who has been diagnosed with ALS. The Durham Walk for ALS last year raised $83 491. Sixty percent of the proceeds raised goes to Durham clients to support them while living with ALS and the other 40% goes towards finding a cure. I have hope that if we keep raising money and awareness for ALS there will one day be a cure for this awful disease.
