16 FOCUS - JUNE 2017 Eight-year-old Sarah McLaren is hoping to raise awareness and encourage the community of Scugog to help support and protect our polli- nator population. Bee population in recent years has seen a dramatic decline and concern for a solution is current and relevant. Sarah is hoping neighbours and friends would be willing to plant bee loving wildflowers this spring and would appreciate donations in any amount towards supporting the Ontario Beekeepers’ Association (not for profit organization). She has already began promoting her bee cause and is planning on distributing 400 flower seed packages containing local Ontario GMO free wildflower seeds to neighbouring homes, in hopes that they will plant and grow them this summer. Within her initiative, Sarah is distribut- ing informative flyers explaining ways in which we can all help and encourage bee survival. She is hopeful that this small act can propel a greater positive change in ensuring that our environ- ment remains healthy and thriving for future generations. Sarah and her family have been amazed and overwhelmed so far from the generous response and it is evident that people are truly concerned for our bee population and are eager to find ways to help. Sarah has collected $300. to date after distributing only 50 packages of flow- ers. She has hundreds more to go! Let’s all help Sarah.
