When the first train made its journey to Port Perry in 1871 a mass exodus from Prince Albert was underway. The last major businesses to move were George Emany, another impor- tant carriage maker and the news- paper, the Ontario Observer. It noted its move by changing its name to the North Ontario Observer. When Emany moved to Port Perry, he built the Ontario Carriage works on the present day site of the Old Flame Brewery. The departure of these busi- nesses brought Prince Albert’s com- mercial and business life to a close with only a blacksmith, a general store and a post office remaining. In 1883 several of the Methodist denominations, including the Wesley- an Methodists, amalgamated to form the Methodist Church of Canada. Another union took place in 1925 when most of the Methodists, Congre- gationalists and Presbyterians com- bined to establish the United Church of Canada. Today the Prince Albert United Church stands beside the former Prince Albert Public School, a wood- en structure built in 1860 and now used as a Community Centre. The stately church we see today has changed little over the years. Sheds and stables to house the horses and carriages of the congregation, used to stand at the east end of the building. They disappeared long ago. Stained glass windows have been added over the years and some inte- rior remodelling took place in 1956. The Prince Albert church today is combined with Port Perry United Church and is served by the husband- wife ministry of Elaine Hall and Don Willmer. However, the Prince Albert church has its own services and its own choir. The small but dedicated congre- gation of the Prince Albert United Church keeps the building in excel- lent condition, presenting us with an elegant reminder of the dedication and hard work of the pioneers who founded our community. This September, a special series of commemorative events has been planned for the church.
