For Great Hair Days in May, and they tied the knot on September 3 at Holy Family Church in Parkdale. She was 19 years old. When Bev was first married, she says that one dollar would buy you butter, milk and bread. The streetcars were made of wood, and four streetcar tickets cost a quarter. She recalls that she could clearly see the Royal York Hotel and the Toronto Star building towering over the city, while on the ferry to the island. Now these land- marks are obscured by new skyscrapers. During Bev’s lifetime, there was the dawn of the subway, computers, television, Highway 401, and more. Born on July 2, 1926, in the Bronx in New York, Bev moved to Toronto at the age of 14 and started Grade 9 at Parkdale Collegiate. “Back in the day, there were many magical places to roller skate in Toronto and surrounding area,” says Bev, who used to do the circuit. There’s a Toronto Star article dated April 29, 1989, with a photo of Bev skating with Burt Sills, at the famous Terrace roller rink in Toronto, just before it closed down. Bev was part of a production of GREASE on roller skates, plus she performed many exciting dance moves like picking up a handkerchief with her teeth, putting her legs over her partners’ head, and spinning, spinning, spinning…. Good exercise and social fun, Bev agrees that roller skating should make a comeback. For the past five years, Bev has enjoyed living in a beautiful condo overlooking Lake Scugog, and the city gal “loves it here!” “There’s always something going on in Port Perry,” Bev noted. From her balcony, she can watch the dragon boat races, baseball games, and car shows. What’s her secret to health and happiness at age 90? Bev “eats well” (lots of meat and veggies, whole grains and very little sugar.)And she maintains a positive attitude. “You’ve got to enjoy every day,” Bev advises. “People should try to get along with each other better.” Bev beat colon cancer 40 years ago, and she also sur- vived a freak accident when a pop bottle exploded, injur- ing her leg. But she’s still smiling and still skating! Her t-shirt slogan, “Happiness is Bev skating,” says it all!
