Forty-one years ago, after her roller skates got stolen, insurance paid for new custom built Douglass Snyder skates. Back then, the wheels were $125 and the Goldstar boots were $400. The quality is so good that Bev still laces them up today. Since they are lovingly scuffed, she dons skate covers to match her outfits. “I would never skate in jeans,” Bev commented. Bev still has a nice white skating skirt trimmed with navy piping, which she wore in a photograph with skat- ing partner James Foley on March 25, 1976. It still fits! One of her new skirts, an 89th birthday gift, is a snazzy turquoise number from Tribal Voices in Port Perry. At one time, Bev had over 200 skating outfits. She excelled at all of the skating dances: The Bossa Nova, Tango, Skaters March, Waltzes, and the Polka. “It keeps you young, skating with the fellas,” Bev said with a smile. It was very satisfying for Bev to pass on her skills as a roller skating teacher over the years. Recently, she had a chance meeting with a former student, who recognized Bev and warmly thanked her, for coaching her in prepara- tion for competitions. “It was so nice to see her again,” Bev said. At Coachlite, she’s had a young protégé Nathan, the owner’s four-year-old son, who started out gingerly holding her hand on the rink. Now he is seven, and he’s a great little skater who has graduated from quads to blades. He made her a beautiful birthday card. You should see the bountiful display of cards and gifts in Bev’s apartment: bath items, fine wine, a new umbrella, a sun hat, jewellery, casino gift cards and her favourite, roller skating passes. Hint, hint, Bev says she also needs new roller skate laces! Birthday celebrations included a birthday bash at her son’s house with 48 guests, a luncheon with some local ladies at Sunnybrae Golf Course (Bev wore her roller skate earrings and new red Elizabeth Arden lipstick!), and a dinner out at Harp & Wylie’s. The celebrations will continue this fall, when Bev and her daughter Diane, 70, visit Africa. The mother of seven, Bev’s family tree includes 16 grandchildren plus 16 great-grandchildren. Number 17 is on the way! Her husband, William Gallagher, passed away at the age of 84, after they shared 55 1/2 happy years together. She met him when she was “best chums” with his sis- ters, and he had returned home from the war. That was Stephen Pees sent along this photograph of Bev from her 89th birthday party last year, wearing her snazzy new birthday skirt, which was one of many gifts.
