Protected from foreign invasion by vast deserts and sustained by fertile soil along the river, the ancient Egyptians developed from a single agricultural community into a sophisticated society. Under a system of divine kingship, this Egyptian civilization flourished and endured for thousands of years and it con- tributed strongly to the later cultures of the Mediterranean and Europe. The exhibit Egypt: Gift of the Nile, created by the Royal Ontario Museum, explores Egyptian civilization through its 10 centres: Introduction, PersonalAdornment, Make-up and Perfume, Feeding the Household, Buildings Large and Small, Family Life, Education, Religion, Funerary Religion and the Afterlife. Hands-on artifacts and activities will provide an opportunity for children to get up close with ancient history. Egypt: Gift of the Nile will be on display at the Scugog Shores Heritage Centre & Archives, 1655 Reach St., Port Perry (2nd floor) from March 7 to May 18. The Heritage CentreisopenTuesday-Sunday,11a.m.- 4p.m. Admission is $5 adults, $4 students, $2.75 seniors, $2 children 5-12.
