This original Canadian musical is created and directed by Durham Region’s Liz Auston, inspired by her Scottish grandmother who journeyed to Canada with a 4-month old baby (Liz’s mother) as a war bride, sailing via the SS Aquitania then a long train ride before finally arriving at Union Station in September 1946. It was here that she was finally reunited with her husband Ed “Doc” Cooper, a repatri- ated Canadian navy man. It was Doc’s first time meeting his baby daughter, Ann. A special moment results, which is recreated in the play. The show pays tribute to women who fell for and married Canadian servicemen during WWII while the men were stationed “over there”. The show has a fictional/original story centered on 3 women who become friends during WWII and eventually war brides who sail to Canada on a recommissioned war ship. In addition to historical research, Liz interviewed more than two dozen Durham Region and GTA area War Brides (with their ex-serviceman husbands in some cases) when creating this original sto- ry and script. It was in 2006, a year the Canadian government deemed “Year of the War Bride”, that this original musical premiered at Town Hall 1873, produced by Scugog Choral Society. The show was a sell-out for every performance in its 3-week run, garner- ing interest and attendance by repre- sentatives of Veteran Affairs Canada, CBC, and Members of Federal and Provincial Parliament, with a letter of congratulations by the new Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper. Operation Daddy: Here Come the War Brides delivers a musical journey through the Canadian War Bride ex- perience, backed by a stellar musical score of popular big band, jazzy vocal musical numbers and war anthems of the era!
