The 95-year-old was enthusiastically welcomed by a packed house for her two- hour visit to Port Perry Villa on Tuesday, October 4th. This event was part of the 40th anniversary celebration. During her speech, Hazel joked that she has turned her age upside down, from 95 to 59. It’s all part of her positive attitude toward life. “Only you can determine your attitude, at any age,” Hazel pointed out. “You can be old at 65 or young at 100.” She motivated the audience “to make the decision to be happy, enjoy people and help others.” Keeping active in the community, as well as within the retire- ment home, was advocated. “If you are an artist, teach people to paint,” Hazel suggested. “Or if you miss being a musical director, start a choir or a sing-a-long.” “Keeping busy makes life interesting,” she added. “Don’t stop doing things just because you are getting older.” LIFE IS A HIGHWAY “I look at life as a highway,” Hazel said. You grow from a child, to a teenager and then to an adult. “The highway is never straight.” “The bypasses and potholes – those are the challenges that make us a better person and more independent. Each challenge prepares you for the next challenge.” An ambassador for seniors and a role model for women, Hazel served for three years as the Mayor of Streetsville, and then for 36 years, as the Mayor of Mississauga. “Your Mayor wants to make Port Perry better than it was,” she stated. “And I wanted to make Mississauga bet- ter than it was.” Her goals, of achieving a balanced budget, stimulating housing development and job creation, were all realized. Mississauga was voted the Safest City in Canada five times and it was debt free during her reign. One of the things that she liked best about being Mayor was “helping people.” Hazel’s good work continues. Hazel currently serves as a Chancellor of Sheridan College. She likes to see young women graduating as engineers, carpenters, architects and technicians.
