The key to success for women is confidence, said the woman who had a key position in the business world at the tender age of 21. “Be independent and do your homework,” Hazel advises. She’s an example of how a woman can make it in both the private and public sectors. “Girls don’t have to just play with dolls,” she said. In 1941, Hazel was playing hockey in Montreal, “back when girls didn’t play.” The petite dynamo played centre. “I was small but fast,” joked the keen sports fan. When asked during the ques- tion and answer period if she would change any one thing about her life, Hazel said she would have liked to have had a University education. “University gives you knowledge,” she commented, “but it cannot give you a desire and commitment to suc- ceed. That comes from within.” SHANGRI-LA HOTEL Part of her role as CEO entails travelling to visit Revera retirement homes, where she holds roundtable discussions with residents. Hazel commended the Revera staff for their “kindness.” She encouraged residents to share their sugges- tions, to make what she called the Shangri-La Hotel even better. President of the Residents’ Council, Charles Foster expressed gratitude to Hazel for visiting. He described her metaphor about life being like a highway, as “inspiring.” The special guest was presented with a Revera jacket and a bouquet of flowers. While refreshments were served, Revera residents and the members of the public in atten- dance, had the opportunity to shake her hand, do a photo op, and thank her for her words of wisdom. Charles further commented that Hazel’s visit was “delightful.” “I never thought I would get to meet her,” he concluded.
