That’s the premise for a new book, “Rewind Scugog - The Sixties and Seventies” being released now by J. Peter Hvidsten. Peter retired last year from a long career in newspaper and magazine publishing, but instead of picking up a golf bag, he immediately returned to his love of writing and researching history. “Rewind Scugog” returns the reader to the “good old days”, but the author is quick to point out the publication is not a history book. “It’s a nostalgic and heartwarming flashback – a trip down memory lane,” he says, as he flips through the attractive 175 page publication. Peter admits that when he retired and walked out of the office of Focus on Scugog magazine in May 2015, he expected he’d hook up with retired friends on the golf course. “I envisioned chasing white balls around lush fairways, cooling down after with cold beer, while sitting around solving all the problems of the world,” he says with a smile. But although he enjoys the occasional game of golf with friends, he didn’t have that burning desire to be on the course four or five times a week. “For me, dropping out of publishing after more than 50 years in the industry, just gave me more time to pursue my love of writing and research, in particular the history of Scugog Township and surrounding areas,” he says. So for the past year and a half, he’s spent thousands of hours, scouring through more than 100,000 pages of microfilmed copies of the Port Perry Star, selecting stories and pictures to feature in his latest publication. The book contains hundreds of pictures from the 60s and 70s, scanned from his archive of original negatives, which showcase the community and events of decades past. Each picture and story illustrates just how much has changed, and yet how much remains the same.
