Its importance was due to the enter- prise of those grain merchants who bought, stored and sold grain. By the late 1850s Prince Albert had become, by trade volume, the second largest grain-handling centre in Canada! The first newspaper in the area began publication in Prince Albert in 1857andinitsfirsteditorial,promised to keep its readers informed of the prices of grain and agricultural pro- duce in Toronto and other markets. In 1859 a Presbyterian church was built and then in 1862, a Bible Christian church. Meanwhile the Anglicans increased in number and used the Presbyterian church for their services. There were six ministers liv- ing in Prince Albert so that it gained the nickname of “Saint’s Rest.” At this time Port Perry had only one church, the Methodist Episcopal built in 1856. When businessmen in the area be- gan to make plans for the construc- tion of a railway from Whitby to Port Perry, those who had commercial interests in Prince Albert began to move their enterprises to Port Perry, the northern terminus of the railway. In the fall of 1868 the first busi- nesses began to leave Prince Albert and move to Port Perry. They were George White, an important carriage builder, George Currie, the grain Prince Albert Church (continued from page 23) Built in 1860, Prince Albert Public School is now the Community Hall.
