Celebrate Agriculture Celebrate Agriculture The carnies from out of town that work at the Port Perry Fall Fair can’t just go home to make themselves a proper dinner. They come from far and wide, including Eastern Canada. Problem solved! For four years, an informal group of local residents have volunteered to put on a free meal for the hard workers who put in long hours setting up the fair held on Labour Day weekend. They roll out the red carpet for the carnies, who operate the rides and the games which bring so much enjoyment to the members of the public who attend the fair. Graham Dallas of Port Perry “really enjoys” being part of this special event. He’s a member of the Port Perry Bowling Club, which hosts the dinner at the clubhouse. Bowling club members and others from the community all bring something for the potluck. Graham’s wife Lois likes to make cakes and pies. But Shhh! It’s always a secret what she will be baking! Graham is “on chair patrol,” setting up the clubhouse into a dining room, to serve up to 20 people. It’s nice for the guests to be able to sit down and relax in a cool, air conditioned environment, he pointed out. “The ones who work at the fairgrounds come from all over,” says Graham. “It’s a treat for them to get a home cooked meal.” “It’s a good chance to meet people, young and old, and hear their stories,” added Graham. “The diners really seem to appreciate it,” he says. The volunteers “feel satisfaction from being able to help. We all really enjoy it.” Local resident Sue Pound gets the credit for coming up with this wonderful idea.
