Volunteer members took a hard stand against the govern- ment’s proposal to spend as much as one million dollars to change their name, again. In February, a telephone survey was undertaken to review a possi- ble change to the Lakeridge Health Corporation name. The corporation recently opened their doors to wel- come Ajax/Pickering to their um- brella hospital group of Port Perry, Oshawa, Whitby and Bowmanville. “Given the difficulties in stretching health care dollars to cover vital health programs, it’s hard for me to see the justification for spending what would surely be a significant amount of money on changing the name of all the hospitals. Health care dollars need to be spent on health,” Ms. Wright said. In 1946, the Community Memorial Port Perry Hospital moved from a private to a public sector hospital and then joined with the Uxbridge hos- pital in 1997 under North Durham Health Services. Just one year later, at the government’s direction, they amal- gamated with Oshawa, Bowmanville and Whitby to form Lakeridge Health Corporation. “I stand at events with my donation bucket,” Sandra Spiers an Auxiliary volunteer said, “and collect generous donations. I know first hand how much commitment it takes to raise one million dollars. We need to speak up; to be silent would be wrong.” If you agree with these individuals, call or contact the following officials.
