They are the plucky group of women from the Port Perry United Church who put on the Port Perry Easter Bonnet Parade & Contest each year. “Mary” joins the six other nursery rhyme characters and is portrayed by Port Perry native, Amy Killeen. She’s a French immersion teacher at RH Cornish and the mother of two girls. Amy came up with the idea to have Crazy Hat Day at Scugog schools each year to raise money for the Scugog Memorial Library (Children’s and Teen areas). This is done in conjunction with the Easter Bonnet Contest and in the eight years has raised over $15,000 for the Scugog Memorial Library’s Collections Fund. “We are especially excited this year,” says Pam Hollett, contest creator and co-chair along with Melissa Durward. “From the start we have wanted to expand on what Ken Koury of the Nutty Chocolatier started 29 years ago with his Easter Egg Hunt. Our long term goal has been to really cre- ate a downtown festival for Easter and number one on the Church Chicks wish list has been to have a spring animal petting zoo. Thanks to the generosity of the Port Perry BIA, there will be one this year!”. The fun starts at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Queen Street Post Office on Sunday, April 16th.
