In November, Dr. Brown was honoured as one of seven Regional top physicians by the Ontario College of Family Physicians. She was one of 12 recipients from all the provinces and territories presented with the Reg L. Perkin Family Physician of the Year Award. She was recognized for exceptional patient care, significantly contributing to the health and well- being of society, and for advocating for rural physicians who train others. For over 20 years, Dr. Brown has seen patients, delivered babies, worked in Emergency and provided palliative care. She also coordinated care for the incoming Syrian refugees. She’s a member of 100 Women Who Care, active with the Church Chicks and the annual House Tour and she even plays the French horn in the North Durham Concert Band! DR. MERRILEE BROWN Marilyn has been the highly respected President of the Board of Directors for the Canterbury Common Resident’s Association for the past two years. She lived in Oshawa most of her life where she raised her children and had a career for many years as a Property Manager. Since moving to Canterbury Common in 1999 she has participated and volunteered in various activities i.e. Co-Chair and Chair of the Ladies’ Golf League, convened and assisted at Scramble Golf dinners, a paddler with the Silver Dragons, then became the Pledge Coordinator for the last few years and part of the team that organized the Silver Dragons final year festivities. In her first two years on the Board of Directors she was the Municipal Affairs Liaison and then moved to House and Property Liaison. She was also involved as the Treasurer for the House and Property Committee. For the past two years Marilyn has done a tremendous job of keeping the Canterbury Common Community solidly together during the most challeng- ing period of its existence. Congratulations! MARILYN STAFFORD Rita Hilker is a very capable community-minded individual. While in Ajax, Rita was very active in successful fundraisers for Cystic Fibrosis and the Ajax Hospital Auxiliary, under the auspices of the Kinnette Club of the Kinsmen. Since arriving in Port Perry, Rita has continued to be involved in various important community endeav- ours including serving on the Scugog Seniors Advis- ory Committee in 2013/14 and simultaneously be- coming 1st Vice President of the Port Perry Senior Citizens Club (PPSCC). In 2015, Rita took on the role of President of the PPSCC. Organizing and streamlining are her strengths. She is interested and accepting of new ideas and has been involved in facilitating various new activities including Yoga, Mah Jongg and computer classes. She has excelled in her community service work. RITA HILKER Mayor Tom Rowett and members of Scugog council will honour a group of residents for their generous service to the community. The presentations will be made during the Mayor’s Annual Levee at the Scugog Community Centre on Sunday, January 15, at 2 p.m. Each of the recipients will be presented a certificate of appreciation and their names will be inscribed on the Mayor’s Honour Roll plaque, which hangs in the Scugog Municipal office. Honour Roll 2016 A member of 4-H since he was a young boy, Rob Ashton runs a large dairy farm west of Epsom. Rob has served as President of the Durham West 4-H Club, was a director of the Uxbridge Fair for the past 15 years and has organized the 4-H Dairy Shows. In 2015, he brought together nine members of the class of 1950 Port Perry 4-H Club, to cele- brate the 100th Anniversary of 4-H at the local fair. A maple syrup producer, Rob helps to organize the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Association Summer Tour. He belongs to Epsom United Church. As chair of the Epsom/Utica Canadian Foodgrains Bank projects, he volunteers his time and his farm- ing equipment to assist with planting and harvesting. In April, Rob was awarded the 4-H Ontario Arbor Award for vol- unteerism. A former goalie, Rob also coached Bantam/Midget House League hockey for several years.
