Soup for Thought is Scugog’s very own soup tast- ing benefit that showcases the culinary talents of our local restaurants and chefs and raises funds for the Durham Children’s Aid Foundation, a regional charity that provides scholarship and bursary op- portunities for youth in foster care. What makes the event even more unique is that each patron samples the soup in a bowl that they hand-picked and was painted by a local student. Getting schools and their students to take part in decorating the bowls has been an integral part of the process, says Co-Chair and fellow Trustee Laura Francis. “Not only does it help get the organization’s message out into the community,” says Francis, “but it provides students with the opportunity to invest in helping others who might not have the same ad- vantages they do. Kids want to contribute but aren’t often provided the chance or means to reach out. By painting a bowl for our event, they can connect in a way that is both fun and familiar.” It has been a winning combination for everyone involved. “The response for this event in our com- munity over the years has just been incredible” says Jocelyne Boissonneault, one of the Co-Chairs of the event and a Trustee on the organization’s board. “I told our main sponsor, Terry Vos (Vos’ Independent Grocer) what our event was about and he was on board immediately. The same goes for restaurants who are involved and the people who attend: they love being a part of it.” So much so that Scugog resi- dents have sipped and slurped their way to almost $25,000 in scholarships and bursaries over the years, an achievement that both women savour. “There is no doubt that we live in the most generous town in Durham.” The Durham Children’s Aid Foundation’s 5th Annual Soup for Thought Benefit Saturday February 4 Port Perry United Church 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
