I’m told the bird- watching is excellent. And all this through nature’s finest: the Oak Ridges trail features mainly hardwood forest, while the Trans-Canada is more shallow marsh and forest. “From some locations on the trails, you can actually see the Toronto skyline. But even with the city right there at your feet, you still feel like you’re pretty remote and back to nature.” He stresses the quality of the trails. “One of the items we had to address as a group might sound obvious but was a key in planning and publicizing. ‘What is a trail?’ Ours, we decided in Durham, would be a metre wide and paved.” Ian’s responsibilities include some Scugog-only trails as well. “We have some great lakeside trails here in Port Perry,” he says. “The most visible one runs along the wa- terfront starting at the causeway, through Palmer Park, as far north as the corner of Simcoe and Beech. Toward the north end, the trail follows the Old Rail Line and splits into a couple of branches, one closer to the water than the other, before rejoining.” He also points out some “unofficial” trail opportuni- ties in our area. “There aren’t formal trails there – though maybe someday there will be! – but there’s hiking available in the marshy areas around the Nonquon. That location’s much like the Trans-Canada Trail. And there’s also the East Cross Forest Conservation area, northeast of Enniskillen.” There’s much to enjoy with the use of Durham’s trails: abundant fresh air and light exercise, and an opportu- nity to leave behind the mundane cares of the day to day world and commune with nature. Scugog contains great natural beauty, just waiting daily to be explored and en- joyed. Perhaps best of all, the price is right.
