Lake Scugog Historical Society presents its annual Tour of Pine Grove Cemetery on Sunday July 3. The walk will be conducted as usual by the LSHS president, Paul Arculus. Last fall the LSHS published Paul’s latest book Pine Grove Cemetery which chronicles the history of this impressive cemetery and the role of those buried there in this community’s history. In his walk on July 3, Paul will focus on monuments and people covered in this book. PineGroveCemeteryisthelargestcemeteryinScugog and one of the largest in Durham Region. It contains the earthly remains of over eight thousand souls. The cemetery is unique in Ontario in that so many of those memorialized here have had a significant influence on the community, the province, the nation and beyond. Business people, movie stars, sports legends, politi- cians and just ordinary folk are remembered in this 13-acre resting place: an NHLAll-Star goalie and Stanley Cup winner who played for 14 seasons, a Hollywood actor who featured in an award-winning movie, and a military leader who has a mountain in the Northwest Territories named after him. People who founded such organizations as CTV, C.I.L, General Motors and the Chevrolet Motor Company are also buried here, all of whom will be mentioned during the walk. Those wishing to join in this entertaining presentation are asked to meet at the south end of the cemetery at the Barber St. entrance just east of Jeffery St. The walk gets underway at 2 p.m. The walk will be held rain orshineandthereisnocharge, although a hat will be passed around for the Historical Society upon conclusion of the walk.
