West Shore Village and Taylor Forder Insurance have set out to make a difference in our community. Without the bees and butterflies many species of plants cannot reproduce and survive. With the use of pesticides and modern, large-scale farming practices, pollinator species are rapidly declining, threatening our whole ecosystem. The West Shore Village Garden Committee joined the staff of Taylor Forder Insurance to create a pesticide-free pollinator sanctuary on the grounds of West Shore Village, providing all the necessary needs; wildflowers and native food plants, water and special housing and garden debris. They hope to inspire you to make a difference as well by planting a native garden. 905-985-8660 1-800-248-0848 293 Perry Street, Port Perry www.westshorevillage.com Bees are covered by tiny hairs, which help spread the pollen from the flowers to help new flowers grow. About a third of the world’s food supply depends on pollinating insects like honeybees. Bees are 100 times more sensitive to the smell of flowers than humans. The foraging bees do a‘waggle dance’ to tell bees in their hive exactly where flowers are. There are up to 50,000 bees in a colony in summer. A bee will visit over 1500 flowers for one load of pollen. Most bees are female. Each bee will fly about 800 km in her 3 week lifetime. Each bee will fly about 800 km in her 3 week lifetime.
