FOCUS - DECEMBER 2018 21 Historian Paul Arculus’ latest book, a history of the railway that ran from Whitby to Port Perry and later to Lindsay, will go on sale this month. This work is appropriately titled Nip ‘n Tuck and subtitled “A History of the Port Whitby, Port Perry and Lindsay Railway.” The Lake Scugog Historical Society has planned a book launch to introduce the Nip ‘n Tuck to the public. This will take place in the Rotary Room in the Memorial Library at Port Perry’s waterfront on Saturday December 8. Local residents gave the nickname “Nip ‘n Tuck” as they considered it nip and tuck as to whether or not the train would climb the steep grade when run- ning northward from Whitby into the Oak Ridges moraine and on to Port Perry. This phenomenon was particularly no- ticeable when the loco- motive pulled its maximum compliment of three loaded passenger cars and an equal number of freight cars. Paul’s book gives us a detailed ac- count of the railway’s promoters and devel- opers and the railway’s incredible journey, from the first proposals for the line, through grandiose and sometimes overly ambitious objectives to an eventually quiet existence before it faded into obscurity. ......................
