FOCUS - DECEMBER 2018 5 family for over a century. Their great, great grandparents established the Brock’s store in Port Perry in 1881 on the site of the present Piano Café. This was before the great fire. Marina adds, “It has long been our dream to restore this building to its beautiful 1885 appearance. We are so pleased with the re-creation of the Victorian parapets and the brickwork.” Chris Fleming of Fleming Heritage Restoration has carried out the recent brickwork restoration on the Port Perry buildings, including the creation of the replica parapets based on photographs from the 1880s. His web- site currently has a number of pictures of the restoration carried out on the Brock building. Dan Stone has carefully researched the history and heritage of lot 9, the Courtice and Jeffrey building and Leonard Block at the northwest corner of Queen and Perry Street. Various members of the Courtice and Jeffrey families manufactured harnesses and saddles here from 1872 to 1954. While carrying out some excavations in the back- yard of the property Dan came across a small horseshoe that dates back to the 1920s. During the re-creation of the parapet, Dan decided to place the horseshoe on the struc- ture as a reminder of the building’s heritage. Look up and you will find it too. To the west of Dan’s building is the former Port Perry Star building. Peter Hvidsten sold this heritage building last year, but prior to selling he had also undertaken a detailed restoration of the brickwork and had parapets re-created. Other Queen Street buildings that have been restored include, Hank’s Pastries and Emmerson Insurance across the road. One of the factors that draw tourists to Port Perry to- day is the pure Victorian architecture of the downtown core. Most of the buildings visible today are almost ex- actly as they were in the 1884-1890 period. Thanks to the commitment of our downtown store- owners, Port Perry’s downtown core is an absolute de- light for connoisseurs of Victorian architecture and draws increasing numbers of envious tourists each year.
