I really enjoyed teaching.” Retirement brought Bryan to Port Perry, where his skills soon came in handy. “I designed our house and was the general contractor for the job. Just like being a teacher, you had to stay on top of the people doing the work! We moved in four and a half months after we broke ground. “In the meantime, I was able to contribute to a number of jobs, thanks to my woodworking background: the garage and entrance doors, the gothic windows, kitchen cabinets, fireplace mantle, interior trim and some of the furniture.” The topography of his new wa- terfront property, he learned, created some unique challenges, particularly when cutting the grass. “My property had quite a steep slope, and that made mowing dif- ficult. A lawn tractor wasn’t practical because it could just as easily wind up in the lake!” To paraphrase (and fracture) an old song, Bryan was determined that he would not look back later and say that he fought the lawn and the lawn won. Most homeowners might not readily see a solution to the situation, but he viewed it instead as a chal- lenge to be answered. The invention this analysis inspired would prove as practical as it was ingenious. “I utilized wheelchair technology for my platform,” he explains. “The wheels, motors, batteries.
