For example, ‘is it best to take this medication with meals or on an empty stomach?’ Pharmacy Associates of Port Perry has a website and Facebook page, filled with useful information. Dougbelievesthatthebestpractice in patient care is ABM – appointment based management. “Trusted infor- mation” is provided. Prescriptions are synchronized so patients can pick them up at the same time, usually every three months, and there’s an app for that! He refers patients back to their physicians if necessary. “There’s a Doctor/Pharmacist/Patient triad of care,” describes Doug. His motto is “Care before Cost.” Doug emphasized that “good peo- ple are key” to optimal patient care. He’s been the lead pharmacist at Pharmacy Associates of Port Perry since October, 2015. The staff of nine also includes two part-time pharma- cists and a third, who fills in. “And it’s growing.” Doug is pleased to announce that local resident Kara Phinney is joining Pharmacy Associates. He first met Kara when she was a high school student, working part- time filling up the shelves at a local drug store. Flash forward to 2017 and Kara is working on her clinical training at Ontario Shores in Whitby. As a doctor of pharmacy specializing in mental health issues, treatment and care, Kara will be “a great asset,” privately discussing patients’ problems with depression or anxiety. Doug feels that it’s very important to take the stigma away from mental health problems. “People talk about diabetes, but mental health problems are swept under the carpet.” He’s proud to be one of the co- founders of Whole Health Pharmacy Doug standing in one of the private patient consulting rooms.
