20 FOCUS - SEPTEMBER 2017 For 19 years, Joan Pumphrey had a successful career as a matchmaker, introducing 200 people who ended up at the alter saying “I do.” The dawn of internet dating made her service obsolete. But the 70-year-old is still facilitating connections as an executive member of the Scugog Women’s Networking Breakfast group. Just connections of a different kind. SWNB has been going strong in Port Perry for over 20 years now. It’s a networking group for women in busi- ness. And much more. It was founded by Carol Gray and two other women, who have since moved on. But Joan and Carol still serve as Co-Chairpersons for this popular program, which cel- ebrates its 21st Anniversary in September, 2017. Last year, Carol and Joan, and Joan Ann Evelyn, all received their 20- year awards, and many have earned their 5, 10 and 15- year membership awards. The SWNB gives self-employed women a chance to network and promote their businesses. “SWNB was started because women who work from home need support,” Joan commented. Many wear more than one hat. Carol, for example, teaches Zumba and she also knits everything from win- ter scarves to her latest innovation, water balloons. She opens every meeting with a few fun facts. Everyone gets a turn at the microphone to provide updates on their ca- reers, and there is a table for promotional material. The breakfast buffet is an amazing spread: Think quiche, ham, baked goods and fresh fruit, for only $10. There are lucky draws and door prizes. The highlight of each meeting is the guest speaker. At the July SWNB, renowned author/motivational speaker Monique Howat shared information on three books which inspired her to overcome anxiety and develop self-confidence. The annual membership is $40 per year and has many benefits; networking opportunities, three newsletters, membership directories, member-to-member Facebook group, website and more. Check it out! These amazing women offer everything from life coaching to printing services to homemade dog food! Important friendships have formed over the years, Carol pointed out. Members support each other through life’s problems, of health or heart, as well as supporting each other’s business ventures. Many attend from neigh- bouring towns. Monthly meetings are held from 8-10 a.m. at Port Perry United Church hall. Contact Carol at grayc51@live.com or 905-986-5068 if you are interested. You will be warmly welcomed.
