At the age of eighteen Terry was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) resulting in his right leg being amputated above the knee. While in the hospital he was touched by the suffering of others including young children who were living with cancer and was determined to make a difference. Terry trained for 18 months, learning to run with one artificial leg and covering over 5,000 kilometers. He had decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey the “Marathon of Hope”. As we prepare for the 36th annual Terry Fox Run I still can’t comprehend the magnitude and selfless courage of Terry’s goal. Beginning in St. John’s Newfoundland, Terry ran close to 42 kilometers a day for 143 days through the Atlantic Provinces, Quebec and Ontario. In the beginning therewaslittlefanfare, supportordonationsbutbythetime Terry entered Ontario enthusiasm grew and people began to line his route and donations increased dramatically. July 10, 1980: 3,508 km Scarborough Civic Centre – Terry told several thousand people that his fame was not meant to be of the Run, he wasn’t interested in wealth or notoriety and that he was just a guy running across the country to collect money for cancer research. He also said that the Marathon had to continue even without him. Now in its fourth decade Terry’s story continues to in- spire. The Terry Fox Foundation has a single mission – to fund innovative cancer research worldwide. In 2015-16, TFF invested an estimated $26.6 million to research many types of cancer. The money you raise makes a difference with 84 cents (based on a 3-year average) of every dollar going directly to cancer research. The Terry Fox Run is unique. There is no entry fee, no minimum pledge, no pre-registration and is a non- competitive event. All money goes to the Terry Fox Foundation with any local costs for the Run/Walk cov- ered by local sponsors. Last year the Port Perry Community Run and local schools raised an amazing $44,245.48.
