Instead of our walk for the home- less, this year we are holding a gala for everyone in Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock Townships. Watch for our special invitations, designed by a lo- cal artist, which will be available in local stores, on line and from friends and supporters of North House. Just follow the instructions in the invita- tion and you will be able to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a new and excit- ing fashion with everyone in the three northern townships. Best of all your Valentine will remain in your community to support your family, friends and neighbours. North House is our local, non- profit charity that supports the home- less and those in danger of becom- ing homeless in Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock Townships. We have three programs. Our Outreach Manager is our first responder, assessing the situation and devising a strategy for keeping people in the housing they already have. Our WrapAround Facilitator helps longer term clients form a team of volunteers to help them identify and achieve the short, medium and long- term goals they need to reach to suc- cessfully remain housed. Our Financial Literacy program helps people improve their financial stability, report income taxes, and provides a Financial Literacy pro- gram to local high school students. We all like to think that everyone in our communities is doing just fine. The truth is that there are families and individuals struggling every day to keep their jobs, their housing, food on the ta- ble, and clothes on their backs. It is a hidden problem and most of us would prefer that it remain hidden. North House was created by the communities of north Durham to help our family, friends and neigh- bours with their housing problems. Without permanent housing, people can’t move forward to improve their situation. Their physical and mental health suffers, children do poorly in school, and nutrition is sacrificed to pay heating bills or car repairs. On February 14, we hope you will be our Valentine and join in on our Gala With A Difference.
