Jill Bates is honoured to be of one thirteen people across Canada selected to participate in the United Church of Canada Mission & Service Global Pilgrimage to Kenya the end of March for two weeks. Pilgrimageisawayofmovingwith only what is necessary, being open to the experience and encounters. It is an invitation to transformation and includes three movements; via posi- tive, via negative and via transforma- tive. To be a pilgrim means to move into and through experiences with an open mind and open heart. This visit will include encounters withmembersoftheNationalCouncil of Churches in Kenya, exposure to Kenyan history and culture as well as visits with other mission and service partners. In Kenya, Jill will journey with mission and service partners to see the church’s engagement in recognizing the dignity of life, life af- firming economic development, non- violent peace building and the need to respond to climate change. With help, and much guidance from the Port Perry G-Moms and volunteers from the Port Perry and Prince Albert United Church congre- gations, Jill will be hosting an African dinner at Port Perry United Church, 294 Queen St., Port Perry on Saturday February 11th at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and will offset direct travel costs for her participation in this pilgrim- age. There will be musical entertain- ment in the sanctuary followed by an African dinner in the auditorium. Tickets are being sold in advance at Port Perry United Church 905-985- 2801 and are anticipated to sell out. A very limited number may be avail- able at the door. Upon Jill’s return to Scugog, she will be happy to share her life-chang- ing experiences with any schools or groups who are interested.
