22 FOCUS - MARCH 2019 Looking Back . . . By J. Peter Hvidsten This rare picture of the Epsom General Store from the early 1900s became the home of Jean Jeffrey for close to 50 years. The building is located on the north-east corner of Marsh Hill Rd. and Byron St. in the centre of the village. The former store, now a residence, still stands although its facade has changed dramatically over the years. Epsom General Store about 1910 The Ocean House Hotel, left, circa 1900, was a very important and busy place in the village throughout the later part of the 1800s.This picture shows the south side of the hotel, near the corner of River and Simcoe St., and the Seagrave General Store, partially hidden behind trees. Both of these buildings still stand today, although their uses have changed over the past century.
