When poverty and no jobs are a real- ity, girls may find a “sugar daddy” or turn to prostitution. With vocational skills, they can fend for themselves and have their own money. On the last day the grandmothers walked as a group to the govern- ment buildings in Arusha, where they delivered the statement that was formed from their discussions. It was a very energetic and touching event – being part of this historic moment when grandmothers stood up for their rights. That afternoon the Tanzanian grandmothers left to go home again.
