12 FOCUS - JULY 2019 Can you imagine Scugog without Lake Scugog? It is our defining fea- ture...what has been called our Crown Jewel...we need to all celebrate it! Therefore the Scugog Lake Stewards are organizing the second Annual Lake Week, August 3 to 11. The Lake Stewards have been contacting groups and individuals around the lake to think about or- ganizing some type of lake oriented event during this year’s Lake Week. From Seagrave to View Lake, many groups have already made clear plans. Other groups and communities are still gathering their ideas. Therefore, get your friends together and plan something; such as a water event, a lakeside picnic, fishing derby, a social event, speaker or an evening movie about water that would add to the festivities. If possible, children should be involved but most of all it should be lake-centred and fun! The community of Caesarea has held their own celebration of the Lake with their Regatta for 90 years. This year it runs from August 2 to 4. Not to be missed for children will be the fishing derby on August 4 at Beacon Marina. The Marina also has a com- petition for the best decorated and lit boat. But much more is planned such as sailing championship races, swim- ming, kayaking and canoe races as well as learn to paddleboard sessions. Make sure you bring the family for all the lake and land-centred activities. The popular signature event for the Lake Stewards is our Science Open House in the Latcham Centre in Port Perry, to be held on Sunday August 11. This is where you can learn about all our research work and talk to the committed individuals dedicated to helping protect and enhance the lake. For everyone, the researchers will help you understand the changes taking place in the lake and what we can do to help protect it. Teens and children will be especially interested to peer through our microscopes at tiny lake life as well as get explanations and examples of lake plants and creatures and how they interact. Not every community can organize a big event like Caesarea, however, whatever you can do in your commu- nity, email us at info.scugoglakestew- ards.com and we will help get the word out through our webpage at www.scugoglakestewards.com and our Facebook page. But most of all, let’s celebrate the lake’s recreational, environmental and economic value through some water oriented activities for young and old alike.
