FOCUS - DECEMBER 2018 7 R.H. CORNISH 2018 WE Scare Hunger has yielded 3,229 items, which is approximately 2800 lbs of food. The winning class brought in 411 items, followed by 258 items from a grade 4 class and third place was Kindergarten with 240 items. Kids for Kids started approximately ten years ago with Ruth Chilco a teacher who has since retired. The group has worked and succeeded in digging a drink- ing water well in a village in Kenya called Mwangaza, just west of Nairobi. In 2013, teacher Suzanne Garriock joined the group and soon a few other teachers joined, rounding out a team of four teachers who are working with an enthusi- astic group of 7-8 young leaders of tomorrow. Since then, with guidance from teachers S.Garriock, H.Roberts, A.Phillips and B.Ferguson, the group has; built a school, organized a mobile health clinic, bought the village a heard of goats and built a greenhouse in the village. Last year we decided to help a hospital which is struggling with sterilization in Roatan, Honduras which is the second poorest country in the world and the highest rate of HIV infection in the western hemisphere. Last year, the kids developed a mission statement: “Our mission is to raise awareness about social justice issues including pov- erty, environmental, health care and acceptance. While raising awareness, we like to research and learn about these issues and try to make a difference by fundraising/collecting donations for meaningful causes.” S.A.
