Ideas for new non-smokers to avoid weight gain are also ad- dressed. Natural products such as CRAVE, and alternative treat- ments including laser therapy, acupuncture and hypnotherapy, can be explored. A wide demographic of patients has attended the local stop smoking clinic, for group or individual ses- sions. There have been young preg- nant women who wished to quit. There have been grandparents who wanted to live longer lives to enjoy more time with their grandchildren. There have been cancer patients, undergoing chemo and radiation treatments. One 86-year-old suffer- ing from shortness of breath said her breathing improved when she quit. The chances of staying off ciga- rettes quadruples with medication, and is five times more likely with counselling, compared to cold turkey, Jane revealed. Most people try multiple times to stop smoking, and this is normal, she added. “Every quit attempt is a learning experience,” Jane has observed. She encourages people to keep trying, be- cause, “Quitting smoking is the most important thing that you can do for your health.” All you have to do to get as- sistance in your quest to be smoke free is visit the Family Health Team office in Suite 203 at the Port Perry Medical Associates building.
