Whether it be people, places or things. Remembrance Day is about the people and the places in war time, from the front lines to the medical teams, to the prisoners of war. All those people who served and made sacrifices have the right to be remembered for everything they did for their country and for the world. Speaking for myself and for my family, I am the grandson and the nephew of veterans. My grandfather, Eric Timms, served as a Coder/Communications Officer on the H.M.S. Onslow, a destroyer with the Royal British Navy in World War ll. He left his family at the age of 18 to join the navy and “see the world”. As a 16-year-old teenager, I can hardly imagine joining the navy at such a young age. What a sacrifice that he made both for his country and for his family. I will always remember the stories he told me and how meaningful it was to know him. My uncle, Don Matthews, served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as the commander of the “Desert Cats” F-18 squadron in The Gulf War. He also did a tour with NATO in Haiti. I respect the life that he chose to live - to serve and to protect our country and to keep the peace. On Remembrance Day, I will be remembering my grandfather and my uncle, along with all the others who have served to guarantee our safety and freedoms. Thank you for your service.
