Christmas, Thanks- giving, Easter: each year’s gathering will be different from the last, yet all retain a comforting “sameness.” And their accu- mulation, over time, provides an emotional touchstone to the participants’ lives. But those examples represent more “private” occasions. Within a community, repeated and cherished events help to knit its citizens together, reminding them of their shared soci- ety throughout the years. The Port Perry Fair, 165 years young in 2018, embodies that spirit of common experience. Long-time residents remember coming as children, and now bring their own. Newcomers marvel at the area’s support, in continuing strong attendance and sponsorship, and feel part of that whole by joining in.
