14 FOCUS - AUGUST 2018 Have you ever wanted to try fishing for pinfish? How about looking through a microscope to see what’s really in the lake water? Do you have questions about the lake, which only experts could answer? Then Lake Week is for you. It’s a family friendly inter- active event, to celebrate everything about Lake Scugog. The Scugog Lake Stewards are organizing the first lo- cal Lake Week from August 11 – 19, as officially declared by the Township of Scugog, as a celebration of the lake. The public, especially children and their parents, are invited to come down to the waterfront from 1 - 4:30 p.m. on Sunday August 19. There will be open tents outdoors at the Latcham Centre where everyone will have a chance to interact with well-informed people who will help the community understand the lake’s attractions as well as its challenges. All types of lake life will be demonstrated and explained. There will be microscopes so people can see firsthand what is actually in the food web in the lake. There will be demonstrations of the equipment used to research the water column and sediment year round. Visit the Latcham Centre on Sunday afternoon to hear knowledgeable guest speakers, pick up brochures, or just talk fishing. There will be 19 interesting videos to watch, and lake crafts for the children. Dignitaries will be invited to take a boat ride on the bay with the research team, to see that the Scugog Lake Stewards’ projects are of value and worth supporting. META4 gallery is participating by inviting artists to decorate wooden cutouts shaped like fish, using any me- dium, such as paint, collage, or carving, announced artist Birgitta MacLeod. Suitable for hanging or displaying on a dowel, these unique works of art promise to be popular silent auction items. Lake Week is all about raising awareness and fund raising, Birgitta explained. A member of the BIA and the Tourism Working Group, a sub-committee of the local Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Com- mittee, Birgitta commented, “I got involved because I really love the idea of supporting the health of the lake. My other motivation is from an economic development and tourism standpoint. Lake Scugog is a beautiful, scenic lake, and we need to take care of it and help preserve it.” Proceeds from the sale of the artistic wooden fish will go towards the Lake Scugog Enhancement Project, to help to combat problems such as algae and runoff. Lake Week will kick off on the Saturday night, August 11, with a dance sponsored by Old Flame Brewery in a tent in their courtyard. When dining out in Port Perry during Lake Week, you will notice that there are table toppers on every restaurant table, indicating that for every Old Flame beer sold, 50 cents will go towards the important work undertaken by Everything you ever wanted to know about Lake Scugog LaKe WeeK AUGUST 11-19
