There is less home- work here, noted the 14-year-old, who aspires to be a doctor. Abdullah, 10, says he likes KFC, and he can’t wait for summer when he can go swimming at Birds Eye Pool again. He has his sights set on being a dentist when he grows up. Pizza is a family favourite now, but Ahmed prefers his wife’s excel- lent traditional cooking. They visit an Arabic specialty food store in Scarborough, where they stock up on different vegetables and 50 pitas at a time. Kathy says that the volun- teers have all gained weight, because they have enjoyed so many delicious Syrian dishes. The Ghilan kids have had fun trying winter sports such as tobog- ganing and skating, and they are all looking forward to going to camp in Muskoka again this year. Rehab attends the ladies’ group at Port Perry United Church and the children go to the Youth Group, where they watch movies, play ping- pong and other games. “Life is better in Canada for the family,” Ahmed commented. “This is our home now and we want to stay here.” Keeping in touch with relatives in Syria is easy thanks to Face Time, and they have decided to honour Rehab’s mother or Ahmed’s father when naming their new Syrian-Canadian baby.
