CENTRAL ONTARIO’S BEST ROCK YOUR NEIGHB O U R S O W N E D & OPERATED B Y Teak takes the lead for the first Port Perry Walk for Dog Guides Teak, the famous Port Perry Portuguese Water Dog, has accepted the nomination to lead the Port Perry Walk for Dog Guides, since he feels that the golden retrievers lack focus and attention! Community response for the first local walk has been “overwhelming,” commented Sue Brain, who is one of the organizers. “This town is so amazing.” An awareness campaign is stimulating a lot of local interest. A successful Dog Guide Drive for donations was held on Saturday,April 28 at the SmartCenter. Bookmarks promoting the event are all over town. Recently, Sue had a “fascinating visit” to the Dog Guides training centre open house in Oakville to learn more about this national fundraising initiative. Dogs are trained to assist people suffering from loss of vision or hearing, seizures, autism or diabetes. The goal for next year is to graduate 200 Dog Guide Teams, and this year is on track for 160, she reported. Along with 250 other places nationwide, the Port Perry Walk will get underway at 11 a.m. on Sunday May 27. Registration is at 10:30. Participants can enjoy McDonald’s coffee and Hank’s apple fritters before setting out. The 40 minute walk route starts at Palmer Park, goes across the park to Port Perry Marina, over to PPPrint, up and down Queen St. across to Vos’ Independent Grocer, ending up at the Old Flame Brewery, where Vos’ will serve up a BBQ lunch for all walkers. Along the route, there will be water stations and opportunities for souve- nir photos. A draw for gifts and a silent auction will be held at the end of the walk. Some of the many draw gifts include a beautiful Dog Guide blanket, a bluetooth speaker, stationary from Envoy and a travel bag. All participants will receive a grab bag containing dog snacks from Pet Valu, a dog toy from Canadian Tire, and an exclusive invitation for 50% off MSRP on the latest merchandise at the Adidas Corporate store. Silent auction items include a print donated by Framer’s Gallery, Old Flame gift baskets, a BBQ donated by Betty Headon, 30 lb. bags of premium dog food, one donated by Port Perry Pet Valu, and one from Paulmac’s Pets of Port Perry, and a special gift from Anja of Sweden, to name but a few. There are four levels of sponsorship established, and so far there are already 21 local sponsors. Great Dane is $500 or over, Golden Retriever is $250 and up, Portuguese Water Dog is $100 and up, and Chihuahua is under $100. Volunteers should con- tact Anna Fava at anna5@ powergate.ca.
