Some are involved in the organ- izing and others on race day, when we need people in safety boats and at check points throughout the course. Whatever they do, they’re all vital to making it a safe, suc- cessful, and smooth-running event.” And of course, all the day’s participants, both volun- teers and paddlers, have in mind the event’s ultimate beneficiary. Not surprisingly, Shannon speaks of it with passion and pride. “We have 12 buildings on Scugog Island, including an original school, church, and cemetery. It’s a living history site which focuses on the original settlers as well as their relations with the Mississaugas. I’m proud to say we have an ongoing partnership with the Mississaugas First Nation, and that’s what makes us unique. We have over 40,000 artifacts, most of them donated by local people.” The race’s $50 registration fee helps to keep that re- lationship alive, and Scugog Shores’ facilities operating. Some participants, Shannon says, choose to supplement their donation by arranging private pledges from friends and family. This year, participants have a unique op- portunity: to support a worthwhile community institu- tion while marking the 50th anniversary of Canoe the Nonquon. They’ll be able to make history, while preserving history.
