Dr. Kara Phinney, a life- long Scugog resident, has joined Pharmacy As- sociates of Port Perry as a Clinical Pharmacist and is also on staff at the North Durham Family Health Team, providing specialized pharmacist support to patients, such as smoking cessation and specialist consulting to physicians and other health professionals there. After attending Port Perry High School, Dr. Phinney went on to complete her undergraduate studies at Queens Univer- sity before being accepted to the University of Waterloo's Doc- torate of Pharmacy program. The new Doctorate program, now standard for Canadian-educated pharmacists, provides advanced clinical training beyond the former Bachelor's program. Her clinical training in primary care and hospital practice included diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic pain as well as a specialty rotation in Mental Health. It was there she developed a passion and expertise in dealing with the treatment of depression, anxiety, addiction and other mental health problems. "I have been working with and mentoring Kara for almost 10 years now" said Doug Brown, Lead Pharmacist of Pharmacy Associates of Port Perry. "She is abso- lutely, without a doubt, one of the brightest, most outstanding pharmacists I have had the pleasure of working with. She brings up to date knowl- edge and clinical experience to our practice, to- gether with a warm, welcoming personality that our patients rave about. We are very lucky to have her working with us." When asked about her goals, Dr. Phinney stated "Mental Health issues are pervasive in almost every health- care practice, perhaps one of the most common issues fac- ing the patients we see everyday. I also see challenges with chronic pain that I hope I can help with. I want to make a difference with my patients, acting not just as a pharmacist, but as a person advocating for their general health." "I am so excited about being able to practice in the com- munity I grew up in" she said. Dr. Phinney is Scugog's first and only Doctor of Pharma- cy to practice here and "hopes to bring a new and personal approach" to her patients. "It's a top priority for me to have patients understand their treatments and help them to make informed decisions about their care."
