FOCUS - AUGUST 2017 5 the greater difficulty of running trails versus roads, I like that as well.” Preparing for this fall’s 100-mile test, James will gradually ramp up his weekly distance to 100K – a day’s 20K he terms a “light run” – in addition to entering three “strategy races” this past April, June, and this month (July). James’ wife, Tracy, will accompany him as travel companion in September. “She’s done half’s and marathons, and getting set to do her first 50K. At one race last year, she paced me the last 25 kilometres! She’s a great running partner and I’m blessed for her support. The trip to Michigan will represent the summit of a high mountain James Culp has scaled steadily over the span of 30-odd years. Like most race entrants, he’s an- ticipating the rigours of the physical test, and, in his own words, will be “just looking to finish.” Running, whether training or racing, reminds him daily of another blessing. “When I’m out there, I often think about my good health, that I’m so lucky to be able to still do this when- ever I like. I never take that for granted.” His unpretentious wisdom echoes in most athletes’ minds – as realism, the product of an aging body, replaces the carefree invulnerability of youth. And so do his words speak personally to me, inspiring action on the next item on today’s to-do list. That’s right: it’s time for a run.
