FOCUS - JUNE 2017 47 PROUD TO BE The past 95 years 1st Port Perry Scout Group has played an impor- tant role in our community. Each week 31 adults do a Good Deed, providing the youth of Scugog with an exciting Scouting program. A place where they face new chal- lenges while learning life skills. 1st Port Perry Scouts are well on their way to completing 150 Good Deeds in celebration of Canada’s 150th Birthday. Over the past few months the youth have made napkin ring hold- ers for the hospital at Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Beavers made posters and individ- ual Valentines for all the residents at the Port Perry Nursing Home. Beavers and residents of the nursing home shared a night playing bingo and making pictures. The Scouts set up a large shelter at the Scout Hall so the Beavers could serve hot dogs and hot choco- late to people watching the Santa Claus parade. Scouter Jim Moore stopped on December 30 to save a family and animals from their burning home. Cub Josh Beckett arranged to have 200 trees donated for the Cubs to plant in Nestleton. Cub Josh Bolan is raising money through his “Loonies for the Lake” project to help the Lake Stewards care for Lake Scugog. Cub Arad Pasternak helped a new boy in his class that did not speak English and gave him his LeapFrog. Beavers, Cameron Rimmer, James Steffler, Declan Sedgwick, Flynn Gaylor, Rylan Dempster, Jack Dufton and Zack Graziotto are rais- ing money to help one of the new Syrian families in Port Perry. Hayley, Carter and Noah Ashton cared for their neighbour’s dog for several weeks when they had a fam- ily emergency. The youth have picked up gar- bage at the Scout Hall along North Street, Baagwating Park and the fairgrounds. Scouts built and installed four Duck Hen Houses on Lake Scugog, increasing the chance of survival from 20% to 80% for the eggs hatching. Ventures put down mulch at the Care & Share garden at the fairgrounds. Every day leaders are busy plan- ning the next craft, game, camp and adventure doing one good deed after another.
