FOCUS - JUNE 2017 45 PROUD TO BE As part of the local Canada 150 Celebrations, the pretty village of Seagrave will be the subject of an interesting historical walk. Paul Arculus of the Lake Scugog Historical Society and Larry Doble of the Sunderland Historical Society will join forces to take visitors around this unique community. The community began around a tavern called the Nonquon tavern in the 1840s giving the settlement its original name of Nonquon. When a post office was opened here in 1858, the community was given the name Sonya. Afew years later the post of- fice was moved north and the name went with it to the present-day Sonya and the village was renamed Seagrave. Many years ago this once thriv- ing community had its own school, two churches, a sawmill and a rail- way station. It also had two hotels, a blacksmith, a shoemaker, a wagon maker, a farm implement shop and a grocery store. The village was the inspiration for “Birds Eye Centre,” a popular weekly cartoon in the Toronto Daily Star for many years. Paul and Larry will bring the colourful history of this quiet vil- lage to life on Sunday June 25. The walk will begin at 1:00 at the United Church in Seagrave and will take about an hour. Following the walk, the Lake Scugog Historical Society will serve refreshments. The walk is included as part of Jane’s Walks, a world wide citizen- led promotion of community based walks, named after the late Jane Jacobs, the iconic Toronto advocate for community based living.
