Happy Father’s Day Dear Family Love, Dad I WANT STEAK! www.portperrybutcher.com 251 Queen St., Port Perry 905-985-1456 On June 19, 1910, a Father’s Day celebration was held at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, the civil war veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there. In the 20s, Dodd moved to Chicago to study and Father’s Day faded away. In the 30s she returned to Spokane and started promoting the celebration again. After much resistence, as some saw it as being too commercialized, Father’s Day was soon observed once again since Mother’s Day was already a day of recognition. The day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972. The History of Father’s Day FOCUS - JUNE 2017 23
