But what you likely didn’t know is, he is famous for being the first Whitby baby boy born at 12:12 a.m. on January 1, 1967 at Oshawa General Hospital. No matter where he is on New Year’s Eve, there’s always a big party. At 12:12 after midnight everyone always wishes him Happy Birthday as well as Happy New Year! His Mom Cecilia Thaeter tells the tale of her first baby’s birth. Paul ar- rived two weeks late, despite two un- successful attempts to induce labour. It was like the baby was waiting for the centennial new year to make his debut. It was New Year’s Eve, 1966. Cecilia was in a hospital bed with an IV in her arm, so she couldn’t reach the buzzer. She was feeling nauseous so she called out, and a cleaner popped her head into the room, then went to fetch the nurse. Upon check- ing, it was revealed that the baby was finally on his way. There was a rush to transfer Cecilia from the bed to the gurney and she amused the hospital staff by singing all the way to the operating room. At that time, all Cecilia had on her mind was giving birth. It didn’t oc- cur to her that her wee son would be celebrated as the first Centennial boy. The magnitude of the timing of his birth came clear when Paul Lorenz was visited by newspaper reporters and photographers who captured the historic moment.
