What started out as a co-operative discussion to relocate the Port Perry Fair on a new site behind the arena, to make room for a new public school on five acres of the property, merged into a bitter battle for months between the three authorities. The on-going dispute caused deep splits and bitter dissention among members of the Fair Board and ended with 13 members of the board resigning their positions. When it appeared the Board of Education could not secure the fairground site, they threatened to pull the plug on a new school in Port Perry. Then a few weeks later notified Scugog council the school Fairground, new school controversy of 1986 board would proceed with expropriation of the site. But as we all know, “all’s well that ends well,” and S.A. Cawker School was built just a block north on Old Simcoe Road, and the fair continues to operate at its century old location to this day. For more about this issue and lots of other memorable pictures and stories from the 1980s, pick up a copy of Rewind Scugog “The Eighties”. The book is now on sale at Books Galore & More or at Focus on Scugog.
